Student pilgrims attend World Youth Day 2023

A group of Loreto Kirribilli Year 10 students embarked upon an adventure of a lifetime when they travelled to Lisbon, Portugal to celebrate World Youth Day with the Holy Father and the youth of the world!

World Youth Day (WYD) is an open invitation to go on a pilgrimage with like-minded young people to celebrate their faith in a week of organised events with the Pope. WYD celebrations show a vibrant side of the Church, igniting a flame within young people’s hearts, and encouraging them to freely live the Gospel.

WYD 2023 was held in Lisbon, Portugal. Accompanied by members of our leadership and teaching team, students began their pilgrimage in the medieval walled city of Ávila in Spain, where the atmosphere has changed little since the days of St Teresa, to who the city is dedicated.

The pilgrims then travelled to Lisbon, Portugal to participate in the 16th International World Youth Day; a week of prayer, worship, and celebration in the company of our Holy Father, Pope Francis.

On the morning of World Youth Day, having slept under the stars the night before, the pilgrims joined 1.5 million people to celebrate Mass. Following the excitement of the celebrations, they departed for the tranquillity and relaxation of a post WYD-retreat in the Fátima region. These days were spent in rest and reflection as the pilgrims unwound and processed the amazing days of pilgrimage and their WTD encounter.

World Youth Day gave me the once-in-a-lifetime experience to explore my faith in a new way. I learnt about how my relationship with God interacts and intertwines in my daily life and how my relationship with God should be meaningful and friendly. This chance to grow and reflect on my faith journey has changed the way I feel about my life and relationships. Pippi, Year 10
