May Day 2020

Staff and students came together as a community both at school and remotely to give thanks for Mary, Mother of God, through our traditional May Day procession and liturgy.

Representing the entire student body, a procession of now back on campus Year 12 students respectfully placed flowers by the statue of Our Lady, a procession the whole school usually participates in every year. Staff also laid flowers before the youngest girl in the school was invited to crown the statue of Mary.

While the School Captain was not able to lift up the youngest student for the crowning as is the tradition, this year she warmly offered her support and encouragement from an appropriate distance instead.

The procession and crowning later featured in an online liturgy in which students from Kindergarten through to Year 11 sang, read prayers and verses and joined the procession from their own homes and gardens.

“This day has been part of the fabric of our school for the last 111 years and despite our isolation we came together to continue the Loreto tradition of celebrating May Day.”
