Careers in the Legal Profession

More and more young women are choosing a career in Law, and our most recent LK Connect event, Women in the Legal Profession, hosted by Allens, was a wonderful opportunity for our community to gain insight into the variety of careers, education pathways, and leadership roles in the legal profession.

Our appreciation to current parents Miriam Stiel and Mel Yard-Smith for hosting LK Connect, Women in the Legal Profession at Allens.  Ex-students, students, staff, and parents enjoyed an inspirational insight into the legal world, and the extensive opportunities for women, with  Allen’s hospitality and spectacular harbour views creating a warm ambience in which to network and engage with our wider Loreto community.

The panel was comprised of Loreto Kirribilli ex-students: the Hon. Justice Julia Lonergan (’78), Supreme Court of NSW; Chloe Burnett SC (’98), Barrister, Selbourne Wentworth Chambers; Clementine Robertson (’13), Associate, Allens; and Lara Baker (’09), Senior Corporate Counsel, Safety Culture. Our facilitator was Miriam Stiel, who is Partner and Practice Group Leader – Intellectual Property, Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys at Allens.

The audience heard from women who represent a cross-section of careers within the legal profession. The wide-ranging discussion included the rewards and challenges of a career in law; the impact of AI on the legal profession; the value of mentorship; pathways to the Bar; the importance of ethics, hard work and preparation; and the lasting legacy of a Loreto education.
Notable guest Professor Chester Brown, Professor of International Law and International Arbitration at the University of Sydney Law School, and the Law School's Director of Global Engagement, gave insights into tertiary studies in law.

It was truly evident that our Loreto values continue to provide the backbone of success with all our inspiring ex-students. The panellists shared that the key to career development in all professions was the importance of ‘belief in yourself’ and a famous quote was cited from Mary Ward, ‘Love and speak the truth at all times’.

These successful networking professional industry events could not be possible without the generosity of our corporate connections, through our parent and ex-student network.
