Year 11 student tops the State in Higher School Certificate

Year 11 Maths accelerant student, Lydia, has achieved equal First in Course in Mathematics Advanced in the 2021 Higher School Certificate.

The awards, announced in advance of the HSC results which will be published on 20 January 2022, were presented in an online ceremony hosted by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and attended by the NSW Premier, Mr Dominic Perrottet, and the NSW Minister for Education and Early Learning, Sarah Mitchell.

Placing first in an HSC subject is an enormous achievement, and the whole school community is especially proud of Lydia who completed this course as a Year 11 Maths accelerant student.

Lydia said she was very excited to hear the news, and it was unexpected, as the exam had been more difficult than she anticipated. "The test was significantly different to most of the past papers. I think that my teachers have helped me to adjust to these types of unexpected questions, and to use my problem solving skills in these situations. It definitely helped in this exam! I’m very grateful to the school for all of the support they’ve given me over the past years, and particularly my Maths teacher, Ms Johnson, for her unending help and enthusiasm in our class."

Mathematics Coordinator Rebekah Johnson described Lydia as a gifted student who meets any challenge calmly. “Lydia has continually stretched herself by participating in enrichment programs, internally and externally, and competing in Mathematics Olympiads. She is most deserving of this fine achievement.”
