A Day in the Life of a Robotic Heart Surgeon

A Day in the Life of a Robotic Heart Surgeon

Years 10 and 11 Science students had the extraordinary opportunity to spend a day at Sydney Adventist Hospital as part of A Day in the Life of a Robotic Heart Surgeon, hosted by Professor Tristan Yan. The immersive program was designed to provide students with first-hand insight into modern cardiothoracic medicine, robotic surgery, and the many professionals who work together to deliver exceptional patient care.

From learning about the function and structure of the heart, to robotic surgery simulation, to hearing personal stories from patients, nurses, surgeons and industry representatives, the students had a day of practical hands-on learning and inspiration. The robotic surgery simulation proved especially popular, giving every student the opportunity to operate and develop their dexterity using the state-of-the-art da Vinci 5 robotic system, which is transforming surgical practice around the world.

What made the experience truly remarkable was the generosity of the medical professionals who volunteered their Saturday to inspire our students. Thank you to Professor Yan, Sydney Adventist Hospital, the nursing and surgical teams, medical technology partners, and all those who generously gave their time and expertise.
