August is always a fabulous month in the world of Science as an entire week is dedicated to Science. With only a little over a week until it officially begins nation wide, plans to celebrate this huge event are well underway at Loreto Kirribilli.
As usual, the Science Team have lots of activities planned for Science Week that will continue to inspire a love of learning and passion for Science. Every learner will be involved in coding activities as we focus on autonomous systems technology in support of the theme for National Science Week of Drones, Droids and Robots. There will also be many varied and challenging activities held during lunchtimes.
The Sydney Science Festival has over 100 events that bring science to life with something sure to interest the scientist in everyone.
The Loreto Science Fair will be held on Tuesday 16 August and will showcase the brilliant hypothesis that our Year 8 and Year 10 Scientists have created and tested. They will be interviewed by judges with a background in Science, who will share their stories with our students after the judging. This rich learning activity gives our learners the opportunity to master the four essential skills required for a successful future, as it requires them to think critically and creatively, communicate and work collaboratively.
We are excited to have Felicity Briody as a guest judge. She is the co-founder of the Power of Engineering with a vision to unlock the power of young change makers and inspire the next generation of engineers to solve the world’s biggest challenges. Kylie Hewson, our Scientist in School, will also be judging and presenting. She works for the Australian Chicken Meat Federation (the industry representative body for the chicken meat industry) and is also the Program Manager for the Chicken Meat Research, Development and Extension program.
Our parents are invited to attend the Year 10 Science Fair between 9:00-10:30am, and the Year 8 Science Fair from 1:50-3:10pm in the Science learning spaces.
As Science Week approaches we look forward to the Loreto Community involving themselves in any way possible to display a passion for Everything Science. Unleash the Scientist within.
