Congratulations Madeline Gelagin, Year 11 and Carla Field, Year 11, who represented Loreto Kirribilli at the NSW Plain English Speaking Awards held at Normanhurst Boys High School on Wednesday 17 May. The girls presented compelling prepared speeches with confidence and both performed particularly well in the impromptu speaking section. Madeline came fourth – an outstanding result for a student who has only just commenced competing in public speaking. Carla was chosen to compete in the Regional finals on 30 May. Well done girls!
The Talkology Club
Loreto Kirribilli is excited to announce an initiative which will begin this term for Year 7 to 10 students. It is a public speaking club. The club will be a place where students can improve their public speaking skills in a supportive environment.
What’s in a Name? The Year 11 Public Speaking Leaders Harriet Nolan and Laura Ferguson ran a poll at the end of last term so that students could choose a name for their new club – students chose between four names. The votes were tallied and the new name is…..The Talkology Club!
How does it work? The Talkology Club will be run by students for students. Two Public Speaking Leaders will lead the session each week. The classes are ‘drop-in’ – there’s no need to sign up or attend every week.
What will we be doing? The Leaders will be running games and mini workshops which will be fun and help you improve your confidence when speaking in public. Plus you may improve your oral assessment marks along the way.
Who is it for? All students in Year 7 to 10. Everyone is welcome! You might have no experience (and be terrified of public speaking) or you might be a frequent public speaker who would like to improve your skills.
So if you would like to improve your public speaking and go to a place where you can share your thoughts on the world around you – The Talkology Club is the place to go! Perhaps you have an oral assessment coming up? Come to the club so the Leaders can help you prepare – they can help you with strategies on how to deal with nerves, how to write and use palm cards correctly, how to speak clearly and persuasively and many other areas.
The Talkology Club will commence next week in Week 5. It will be held every Friday at Recess in J4.
Cost? None! But your words will be valuable! There is no need to sign up – just ‘drop in’.
Details about The Talkology Club are also available on Ch@lk under “Public Speaking”.
