The year has begun at full pace and already a few excursions and fieldwork opportunities have been completed. The images come from the Year 7 Geography excursion, Year 8 Geography incursion and the Year 12 Legal Studies excursion.
It has been wonderful to hear bits and pieces of feedback from the class of 2016 and to catch up on their movements after a brilliant year of study. Their gap year experiences sound exciting. Others have begun their study, continue to travel or work furiously to help pay their way. Others are still just resting! The Social Science faculty staff congratulate them on their achievements. Mrs Kirby, Mr Magner, Mrs Cooke, Mr Bain, Mrs Tsonis, Mr Durante, Ms Pearson, Mr Dunn, Mr Stewart and Mr Hopkins.
I want to remind all parents and students to ensure they have a soft cover atlas available in the family room. It is an essential addition to the family room for discussions, planning trips, catching up on contemporary issues, events, crosswords and news. All students should also have downloaded Google Earth Pro to their desktops. It is a free download found at student services and is arguably the best thing to come out of the world wide web. Also, another reminder for students and parents is to continue watching LK Weather. Given the hot, humid days and now rain, the LK Weather link on the left hand side banner of the CH@LK page is always worth tapping in to.
The faculty is also moving ahead with developments in the area of augmented reality. We have a class set of Google glasses which many students have been able to access and our latest venture is into the world of Google Expeditions. You can learn a little more here.
Soon, the Year 11 Geographers will be enjoying an overnight fieldwork experience in the Blue Mountains with an emphasis on fire regimes. The Year 10 Geographers will be busy around North Sydney toward the end of term exploring issues about the growth and change within the North Sydney region. They will be spoken to by some Town Planning experts from the Council before they spend the day in the field. Our senior social scientists are busy completing their first assessment tasks in Business Studies, Economics, Legal Studies and Geography. Year 12 are gearing up for the Half-Yearly exams.
