Creativity takes courage – Henri Matisse
Music in 2017 started with girls sharing performances at Grandparents’ Day, Twilight Tours and the Senior Music Soiree. New classes have settled into creating sounds and concerts have been attended. There is a real sense of excitement as the House Choirs begin their rehearsals for the Music Festival and new sounds fill the music centre.
HSC MUSIC 2016
We are thrilled with the wonderful results of our 2016 HSC Music students and we congratulate each student. Firstly, all our students from the HSC Music 1 course were awarded a Band 5 or 6. I also congratulate our two Extension Music students as they both received Band 6 for the Music 2 course component and E4s for their Music Extension component. Both girls also received the highest accolade with nominations for the prestigious HSC Encore concert. Isabelle Kahout was nominated for her outstanding vocal performances, with her repertoire ranging from two contemporary Australian pieces, to a Menotti operatic aria, and three musical theatre songs. Sophie Parker, a beautiful pianist, was nominated for her outstanding composition work. Her core HSC Music 2 composition was titled Bend and Snap and was written for two double basses, one of which was played percussively – ‘drummed’. Her elective HSC Music 2 composition was written in the style of the composer Debussy for piano and was titled Chatoyant. I thank the Year 12 Music teachers and their Private Music tutors for the development and support of these girls for this journey.
Meet the Music
It is important that we always encourage our students to not only perform and compose music but also provide an opportunity to be critical audience members. This is adding to their growth of their musicality with a deeper insight into a broad range of orchestral repertoire … all on the other side of the harbour. This is why we offer our Elective Music students the opportunity to attend the Meet the Music series at the Sydney Opera House. Preparation for these four wonderful concerts is also a vital part of our classroom programs to ensure the girls make the most of what they hear and see. I thank Ms Madeleine O’Connor for her efforts ensuring we have the best organisation as well as the best seats for these concerts.
Encore 2016 Concert
Earlier this week, our Year 11 and Year 12 Music students attended the HSC Encore concert at the Sydney Opera House. This concert showcases outstanding performers and composers from the Higher School Certificate. The students are now motivated to work towards their own performances and compositions after this concert experience.
Year 8 Excursion to Aladdin the Musical
On Wednesday, 15 March, the Year 8 students were given a musical treat as they attended the matinee performance of Aladdin at the beautiful Capitol Theatre. As part of the Year 8 Music program the girls begin to study ‘Music Theatre’ and are assessed in their own adaptation of a scene from a musical. I thank Ms Gillian Odell for her careful organisation of this wonderful experience and all the teachers who accompanied us for the event. In the words of student, Abby Sage – “Aladdin was an amazing experience for all as everything was shining, shimmering and splendid! All the special effects were wonderful and everything was bright and bubbly. The music was terrific and the Genie’s songs were all spectacular. Overall, Aladdin was the best musical I have ever seen as everything just went so well together.”
As a team we have chosen to develop our faculty goal to refine improvisation and compositional ideas with all classes in Music from Years 7 to 12. Throughout the year we will be collecting samples, data and reflections from the girls about these new tasks to assess the growth in their confidence in being more creative with their music making. It is important that we embed time for creativity into all composition lessons so the girls can ‘play’ with ideas on their instruments, both individually and in groups to ensure their ideas are imaginative and authentic. Research also suggests that the students need time to observe excellent models of composers and their works. As a staff we are continuing to research how to unlock musical creativity and develop the girls’ confidence with music making and we are investigating ways to share these compositions with the community.
Senior Music Ensembles
We truly have an incredible array of Music Ensembles at Loreto Kirribilli and these have started and are rehearsing ready for the year and for the exciting 2017 Music Festival adjudications and celebrations. Please contact the Music Department if you have any questions about our ensembles and how your daughter can participate.
This year we welcome Mrs Bernadette Jacka to our Music team. She is teaching Year 7 Music and always brings her enthusiasm and love of music to the students in her class. We wish Ms Gillian Odell a wonderful long service break in Term Two.
